A Texas family’s dog was wounded when shot while coming to its rescue during a home invasion Friday morning, police said.
The dog, whose name has not been released, was shot in the paw by one of the four armed intruders who entered the Houston home around 1 a.m. through an unlocked back door, KHOU reported.
The intruders found the father in the kitchen and one of the men held him at gunpoint while the others ransacked the house. The other members of the family were told to stay in their rooms, but a 17-year-old got out through a window and ran for help, KHOU reported.
As the intruders were going through the home, the dog tried to attack them. They fled when they also realized the teen had escaped.
The intruders left with the father's wallet, which was later dropped during their escape, and cellphone, KTRK reported.
The dog was taken to a veterinarian and is recovering.
The father, mother and three children are shaken up but otherwise not injured.
Police do not have descriptions of the intruders.
