When smoke began to rise in the kitchen, a South Florida family's dog awoke its owners, allowing for a safe escape, WPLG reports.
Silvia Reyes, her husband, and their 13-year-old son, Marcus, were asleep in their townhouse when Candi began barking.
"We heard a lot of barking and howling," Silvia Reyes, said. "To my surprise, at 1 in the morning, I came down, and our kitchen was engulfed in smoke."
While the Reyes’ were able to escape unharmed, their dog suffered a collapsed lung. Veterinarians determined that "smoke inhalation caused her lung to collapse," but she is expected to make a full recovery, according to WPLG.
