A Detroit mother whose infant daughter drowned in sewage at their home has been sentenced to a year in jail.
Dasiah Jordan, 27, was sentenced Monday to one year in jail and four years of probation in the death of her 11-month-old daughter, Ca'Mya Davis. She pleaded guilty to second-degree child abuse and involuntary manslaughter.
On July 6, 2018, Jordan left Ca'Mya in the care of Tonya Desirae Peterson, 29, at their Detroit home, Fox 2 Detroit reported. The baby was unattended when she fell through a hole in the floor of the home and into the basement, which was flooded with sewage, prosecutors said. Ca'Mya drowned in the sewage.
Both women were aware of the hazard, prosecutors said.
"Poverty is not an excuse," Judge Wanda Evans said as she delivered the sentence, WXYZ-TV reported.
Peterson is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
