Multiple day care centers in a Louisville, Kentucky, community are closed after a toddler died after being left in a van operated by a day care employee.
WDRB reported that 2-year-old LaVontae Swain died from hyperthermia when he was left in the van for several hours. He was found unresponsive by carpool attendants in the day care's carpool lane.
"He was my only child," his mother, 19-year-old Carless Swain, told WKYT. Swain, who did not have custody of her son and was in the foster care system with him, said her aunt runs the day care her son attended.
In response, the state's Cabinet for Health and Family Services issued an emergency order to close day care centers Lil Kings and Kings and Queens Development Kingdom II and Lil Kings and Kings and Queens Learning Academy.
"This suspension is being issued because the Cabinet has probable cause to believe that an immediate threat to the public health, safety or welfare exists," an order said.
The CHFS said counselors will be available to children who knew LaVontae.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the little boy’s family and all the children and families impacted by this tragedy," CHFS Secretary Vickie Yates Brown Glisson said. "Ensuring the safety and well-being of Kentucky’s most vulnerable citizens is our highest priority and we will not hesitate to take action against facilities that place children in harm’s way."
The case will got to the commonwealth's attorney's office next week to determine if anyone will face criminal charges.
