Federal Way firefighter injured after roof collapses

Illegal fireworks caused a fire to spread from a roof in Federal Way through the second story of the home. A family of nine was displaced by the fire.

"I was so scared,” said Catherine Kubiak, a neighbor who spotted the flames on the roof Saturday afternoon.

She said the fire started just a few feet wide on the roof. It took only minutes for it to consume the roof and for the flames to shoot 20 feet in the air.

"I was just thinking, oh my God,” said Kubiak.

According to firefighters, the residents did not have renter’s insurance. Those residents weren’t home at the time of the fire.

Now, police will try to track down who lit the firework that burned the house.

"It's supposed to be such a fun day, but when something like this happens, you just don't realize how devastating it is,” said Kubiak.

That fire was one of dozens that kept firefighters busy on July 4th. Many of the fires were brush fires caused by fireworks.
