The 21-year-old had only had water and a bag of chips at a south Charlotte gas station that day, Ledford said, and he was hungry.

Roof allegedly killed nine people at a prayer group at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, S.C.,the day before. Police said he took off after the shootings in his car, which has a Confederate States of America plate on the front.
