The former Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz, Nazi Germany, currently in modern day Poland, is a tourist attraction reminding millions of the atrocities of those imprisoned and slaughtered there during World War II.
A great many of those prisoners were killed in gas chambers. That’s why dozens of people complained after museum operators installed misters near the entrance to the building.
Management pointed to Poland’s record heat as the reason for the water vapor but that didn’t satisfy Meyer Bulka.
“All the Israelis felt this was very distasteful,” he told The Jerusalem Post. “Someone called it a 'Holocaust gimmick.'”
Despite the blowback, facility managers say one tourist has fainted from the heat, and they won’t remove the showers.
“We aren’t used to high temperatures in Poland in the summer,” a worker explained. “We needed to provide a response to the many visitors, so they can cool off.”
Some visitors sided with the museum saying, sometimes, “a shower is just a shower.”
The Krakow Post writes, "Auschwitz tourism this year has hit record numbers, with over 250,000 people visiting in the first three months of 2015 alone, 40 percent increase over the same period the previous year."
