A college student turned to a do-it-yourself method when it came to straightening his teeth.

According to CNN Money, Amos Dudley, a 24-year-old digital design major at New Jersey Institute of Technology, made clear braces for himself with the help of a 3-D printer.

Dudley used school equipment to create models of his teeth. Using a process similar to the one used by orthodontisists, which took into account the maximum recommended distance that a tooth should move, he created a set of 12 clear plastic braces, CNN Money reports.

He was able to save thousands of dollars, spending less than $60 on the materials to make the models, as opposed to spending up to $8,000 for name-brand clear braces, according to CNN Money.
