Tyler Barton, a Student Honor administrator, told The Scroll, "We would consider the ‘man-bun’ to be an extreme hairstyle. It’s just something that deviates from the norm.”

Students who attend the university are required to follow the Honor Code which mandates behavior in line with LDS teachings. The honor code indicates that male students hairstyles should be "clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles of colors and trimmed above the collar leaving the ear uncovered."

Last semester, students with the hairstyle were reported to the Student Honor Office, but were still allowed to take tests at the university testing center.

The Scroll newspaper is described as a source for campus and local news for BYU-Idaho students in Rexburg, Idaho. The university is owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
