Sandra Mocha and Giovanna Melendez were later charged with assault.

Times Square Alliance president Tim Tompkins told the Daily News, "This is another reason why we need regulations to address the growing problems in Times Square."

Gawker reports that mascot brawls are not uncommon in Times Square. Incidents include two Iron Men, an Elmo, and a Spider-Man arrested for aggressive panhandling, and another Spider-Man punched a police officer (WARNING: video contains strong language.)

The New York Police Department have been handing out fliers to let them know that tipping for a picture is not required. Some costumed characters have formed a group "Association of Artists United for a Smile" to help create a culture of respect from police officers.
