A New York City man who allegedly beat to death a man who attempted to rape his wife had his criminal charges reduced Tuesday.
According to People magazine, 61-year-old Mamadou Diallo was facing manslaughter charges, but those charges were reduced to simple assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Diallo was arrested Monday after police say he beat Earl Nash, 43, to death with a tire iron in the hallway of Diallo's apartment building.
Nash allegedly forced his way into the building and approached Diallo's wife, hit her multiple time in the head and began to remove her clothing. Diallo's wife was able to break free from Nash and called Diallo, who arrived and caught up with a shirtless Nash. As Nash tried to enter an elevator, Diallo attacked him with the tire iron, according to People.
Diallo was released from police custody Wednesday and his defense attorney, Anthony Michaels, said a crowd cheered as he left jail. Michaels also said he had received calls from people offering to pay his client's legal fees.
Diallo is due back in court on June 27.
