The Anna Maersk left the Philippines on June 1 with 1,500 tons of decaying garbage and electronic waste that was exported to the Southeast Asian country in 2013, CBC reported.

The Philippines called on Canada to take back the trash, which was supposed to be uncontaminated recyclables.

The garbage will be taken and burned at a waste-to-energy plant, which will produce enough to power 100 homes for a year, CBC reported.

The dispute brought to the light the practice of developed nations sending trash to other places for disposal.

China stopped processing other countries' plastic waste in 2017, leading to more of it being disposed in Southeast Asia, where it is more difficult to manage and dispose.
