A 3-year-old California boy died Wednesday after climbing into his family's car in scorching heat, KTLA reported.

The boy, his parents and his 14-year-old brother were napping in their Sylmar home around 12:30 p.m., but the toddler woke up and wandered outside, police said. The boy reportedly climbed into the family's Toyota and overheated.

The family found the child around 3:30 p.m. and called 911, according to The Associated Press.

Wednesday's temperatures reached the mid-90s, the National Weather Service reported.
