A terminally ill Chicago boy who received birthday cards from supporters around the world died Sunday, just days before his sixth birthday.
According to WMAQ-TV, Lucas "Bear" Cervone died Sunday afternoon after a long fight with cancer. He would have turned 6 on Saturday.
"At 506pm CST, Lucas BEAR took his last breath," his family wrote in a Facebook post. "He is cancer free and no longer in pain."
Lucas made headlines last week when his family asked supporters to send him birthday cards to lift his spirits after he received devastating news that he had an incurable tumor by his heart.
"What we want to show him is his family will be here with him, as well as everyone else," Lucas' father, Anthony Cervone, told WMAQ.
Well-wishers around the world responded to the request, flooding an area UPS store with so many cards that it was "running out of space," according to WLS-TV.
Among his supporters was "Modern Family" star Ariel Winter, who asked fans to send cards to Lucas.
"Let's use the power of the Internet for good today, spread the word & help give Lucas the best birthday by sending him well wishes," Winter said in an Instagram post.
Lucas' family threw an early birthday party for him over the weekend.
"We were surrounded by family and friends, and Lucas truly enjoyed himself," his father wrote on Facebook.
