Members of a New Jersey Boy Scout troop jumped into action when a bear attacked their leader.
A Boy Scout called police for help on Sunday and said a black bear attacked his leader in a cave during a hike in Rockaway Township, New Jersey, PIX11 reported.
Police found the group of three scouts and their leader using cellphone GPS.
The scout leader, Christopher Petronino, was flown to a hospital for treatment, but his injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Petronino had bites and scratches on his scalp and legs, ABC News reported.
Petronino said the bear grabbed his foot and pulled him farther into the cave. He hit the bear twice in the head with a rock hammer before yelling to the scouts to leave the area and get help.
He also told the scouts to leave food at the mouth of the cave to lure the bear out, CBS News reported. It eventually left the cave.
The boys were not attacked, CBS News reported.
