Alaska soon will be giving out free pregnancy tests in the unlikeliest of places – bar bathrooms.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, the state-funded pregnancy tests will be available in the restrooms of 20 Alaska bars starting in December. The University of Alaska is heading up the two-year, $400,000 program in an effort to fight the state's fetal-alcohol syndrome rate – the highest in the country.
Republican Sen. Pete Kelly, who first proposed the program, raised eyebrows in March when he told the Daily News that he wouldn't support a plan to provide free birth control in bars.
"This assumes that if you know (you are pregnant) you’ll act responsibly," Kelly said. "Birth control is for people who don’t necessarily want to act responsibly."
The agency overseeing the project will make sure condoms are available in the bathrooms where pregnancy tests are offered, said David Driscoll, director for the University of Alaska Anchorage Institute of Circumpolar Health Studies.
