Birmingham City Schools officials said they will conduct an investigation after Tuesday's incident, AL.com reported.

Spokesman Greg Williams said the bus service was operated by a contractor, the website reported.

“The safety of our students is paramount,” Williams said in a statement. “The district is working with the contract bus service to conduct a full investigation and review safety measures in an effort to avoid similar situations in the future.”

The student's parents were notified and a school administrator visited the family Tuesday, WIAT reported.

Williams said he was "not at liberty" to discuss the student's health situation and did not say which school the student attended, WBRC reported.
