Alabama's governor ordered the Confederate Flag be removed from the state Capitol grounds Wednesday morning.
According to al.com, Gov. Robert Bentley ordered the flag which was displayed at the foot of the confederate memorial in Montgomery, to be removed.
At 8:30 a.m., two workers came out and quietly lowered the flag, refusing to answer the al.com reporter's questions.
When asked later if it was in response to last week's deadly shooting in Charleston, Bentley responded, "Yes, partially this is about that. This is the right thing to do. We are facing some major issues in this state regarding the budget and other matters that we need to deal with. This had the potential to become a major distraction as we go forward. I have taxes to raise, we have work to do. And it was my decision that the flag needed to come down."
The cornerstone of the monument, which is near the Capitol's north entrance, was laid by Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederate States of America in April 1880, al.com reported.
