Border protection agents arrested a man who allegedly tried to smuggle four people hiding in his vehicle's trunk into the United States from Mexico, CNN reported.

Agents at the San Ysidro border stopped the car for inspection. When they opened the trunk, they found four Chinese nationals: three women and one man, CNN reported.

The officer said the Chinese nationals had no authorization to legally enter the United States.

They were taken from the trunk into custody and will be removed from the country following criminal proceedings, CNN reported.

The driver, a 24-year-old American citizen, was arrested and reportedly awaits federal charges.

"Concealing persons in vehicles is dangerous and could have severe consequences," said Pete Flores, director of Field Operations for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in San Diego.
