The Confederate flag was temporarily taken down at South Carolina’s State House Saturday morning.
The Associated Press reports that Bree Newsome, 30, was about halfway up the flag pole when State House police ordered her down. She continued her mission, grabbing the flag before descending.
Newsome and James Ian Tyson, 30, were arrested. They were each given a $3,000 bond and allowed to leave the state, according to news reports.
Social media quickly picked up on the news of the activist’s actions.
The flag was raised again a short time later. Many on social media were angered to see an African-American worker raising the Confederate flag back up.
Confederate flag supporters are gathering at the capitol for a rally.
Calls for removing the flag have been renewed since nine black churchgoers were killed by a white man with racist ties at a Charleston, South Carolina church last week.
