"The man who inspired the film '127 Hours' is waking up in a Denver jail this morning. ... Ralston famously cut off his forearm when trapped by a boulder. He was arrested on domestic abuse charges over the weekend. He's due in court today." (Via ABC)

Ralston first made headlines back in 2003 after he escaped a Utah canyon by amputating his right arm with a dull knife.

He wrote a book about his experiences called "127 Hours." James Franco starred as Ralston in the 2010 film adaptation.

KMGH reports the 38-year-old was booked into the Downtown Detention Center early Sunday on charges of assault and wrongs to minors.

Despite the charges, Ralston's father has already defended his son, saying he's confident his son did not hit his girlfriend or their three-month-old daughter.

The Denver Post reported an argument supposedly broke out between the couple while their young daughter was around.

Ralston's father told the paper, "There apparently was some type of heated argument, police got involved, charges and counter charges were filed. This is just two people trying to work out a difficult relationship."

Police say they cannot officially release further details until they’ve met with a domestic violence detective.
