A Georgia firm is recalling more than 15,000 pounds of frozen chicken nuggets.
The US Department of Agriculture says the fully cooked nugget product from the Perdue factory in Gainesville may be contaminated with extraneous materials.
The company is recalling 8 oz. boxes of Applegate naturals chicken nuggets with the establishment number "P2617" and a best before date of “02/05/15." The U.S.D.A's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) says the products were shipped to retail outlets nationwide.
According to officials, the problem was discovered after consumers complained that they found pieces of plastic in their chicken nuggets. As a result, Applegate withdrew the product Aug. 8; however, because the nuggets are frozen, the company fears customers could still have the product. There have been no reports of injury or illness from consumption of the product.
FSIS officials say they conduct recall checks routinely to verify that organizations are notifying their customers of the recall and that they are taking the proper steps to make sure the product is no longer available to customers.
Consumers with food safety questions are asked to contact a the FSIS virtual representation available 24 hours a day at AskKaren.gov.
