The son of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is facing criticism after he referenced the Holocaust to illustrate how he believes the media treats Republicans and Democrats differently.

Donald Trump Jr. said while speaking with WPHT on Wednesday that the media has acted as Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's "No. 1 surrogate."

"Without the media, this wouldn't even be a contest, but the media has built her up. They've let her slide on every (discrepancy), on every lie, on every DNC game trying to get Bernie Sanders out of this thing," he said. "If Republicans were doing that, they'd be warming up the gas chamber right now."

The Anti-Defamation League responded Thursday to the comment, writing on social media: "Trivialization of the Holocaust and gas chambers is never okay."

"We hope you understand the sensitivity and hurt of making Holocaust jokes," the ADL wrote in a tweet addressed to the younger Trump. "We hope you retract."

Trump later told NBC News that he did not mean for his comment to come off as anti-Semitic.

He told WPHT tht his father is "always going to be himself."

"I think he's always been the same guy," he said. "He's always cared about all people. But I think you have to express that differently in the way he's known to be very forward, very aggressive in business. That has served him very well for 40 years. It will actually serve him very much as a leader in terms of delivery and message to make sure that everyone understands. I think he gets it now. He hasn't been a politician his whole life."

Trump has consistently criticized the media over the course of his campaign for perceived bias against him.
