Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump held a campaign rally Tuesday in Ashburn, Virginia, where he touched on a number of topics -- but it's what happened off the stage that's making headlines.

As Trump spoke about China's currency, he was interrupted by a crying baby in the crowd.

He told the mother not to worry about the baby because he "loves babies." When the child cried a second time, Trump said he was kidding.

"Don't worry about that baby. I love babies," Trump said, according to Politico. "Don't worry about it. I love babies. I hear that baby crying, I like it. What a baby. What a beautiful baby. ... The mom's running around like — don't worry about it, you know. It's young and beautiful and healthy, and that's what we want."

He then continued his discussion of China.

"They have ripped us to shreds, ripped us absolutely to shreds," he said.

Then, he heard another cry.

"Actually, I was only kidding, you can get the baby out of here," he said as the audience laughed.

"That's all right. Don't worry. I, I think she really believed me that I love having a baby crying while I'm speaking. That's OK. People don't understand. That's OK."

CBS reporter Sopan Deb says a second baby was also heard crying at the rally.

Earlier at the same rally, Trump received a Purple Heart from an Iraq War veteran and told the crowd that he'd always wanted one.
