Doughnuts fill such a significant hole in America's heart that the doughy treat has not one but two national days dedicated to it. Today marks the second National Doughnut Day.
Whether your preference is cakey, light, filled or powdered, the country has hundreds of shops one can visit to celebrate today. If you're looking to narrow it down, Travel + Leisure and Yelp teamed up a few weeks ago to pinpoint just which shops hold the honor of most indulgent doughnuts in each of the 50 states. Yelp examined bakeries in every state and ranked each by an algorithm based on number of reviews and star ratings on Yelp.
Yelp shared its data with travel site Travel + Leisure, and the results show doughnut lovers have a liking for shops outside the major cities in many states. Like in Texas, Snowflake Donuts & Cafe in Spring won the title of best in the state. Reviewers lauded the shop for being “veteran-owned” and its giant cinnamon roll. Other small town shops that won the best shop in their state include Ralphs Donut Shop in Cookeville, Tennessee, The Donut King in Eufaula, Alabama, and BJ Cinnamon in Folsom, California.
Georgia’s best doughnut shop kept up with that suburban doughnut shop motif. Though in-town Atlanta shops such as Revolution and Sublime have won other national accolades, an Alpharetta doughnut shop took the cake this time.
Yelp and Travel + Leisure named Sweet Apple Donut & Coffee the top doughnut shop in Georgia. The North Fulton shop has garnered more than 175 reviews, and reviewers simply gush over the shop’s variety of doughnuts.
In addition to the tasty doughnuts, visitors have the incentive of never having to guess who will serve their treats. Sweet Apple is owned and operated by the Van Ness family, and its only employees are Soo-Jin (Jin) and her son, Vincent.
