Tropical depression 9 has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is threatening to bring storm surges, damaging winds and heavy rainfall for the northern Gulf Coast.

According to the National Hurricane Center, tropical storm conditions are likely Friday in the Cayman Islands and western Cuba. It is forecast to hit the northern Gulf coast at near-hurricane intensity on Sunday.

The center said there is a risk of life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds and heavy rains Sunday and Monday along the northern Gulf coast from the Florida panhandle to the upper Texas coast.

At the same time, Tropical Storm Nora has formed south of Mexico, and a hurricane watch has been issued for portions of Mexico’s southwest coast. Nora is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane as early as this weekend.
