‘This one cuts deep’ | Oprah, other stars react to death of Cicely Tyson

Cicely Tyson, one of the pioneering Black actors of this generation, has died at age 96, leaving behind an unmatched legacy in film and television that thousands have paid tribute to during the last day.

Tyson, who gained an Oscar nomination for her role as the sharecropper’s wife in “Sounder,” won a Tony Award in 2013 at age 88 and touched TV viewers’ hearts in “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,” died Thursday.

Tyson’s death was announced by her family, via her manager Larry Thompson, who did not immediately provide additional details.

“With heavy heart, the family of Miss Cicely Tyson announces her peaceful transition this afternoon. At this time, please allow the family their privacy,” according to a statement issued through Thompson.

Tyson just days ago had released her memoir, “Just As I Am,” recounting her difficult-yet-rewarding journey becoming a Black actor as a single mom. In an interview with CBS News’ Gayle King recently, she said she wanted to be remembered for doing her best. Those who memorialized her online, including her “Roots” costar LeVar Burton, Oprah, Zendaya and others, made it clear in their tributes that she did just that.
