More than 400 shootings were reported across the U.S. over the recent July 4 weekend, with at least 150 people left dead in the wake of the violence.

Those numbers were compiled by the Gun Violence Archive and are being reported by CNN.

The data cover a 72-hour period from Friday through Sunday.

New York City

In New York, CNN reported, there were 26 victims from 21 shootings from Friday to Sunday. Gun violence incidents in New York have spiked almost 40% over the same period in 2020, with 767 shootings and 885 victims.

Chicago

In Chicago, 83 people were shot, including 14 killed, in shootings from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday, according to the network. Two Chicago police officers were among those injured when a suspect opened fire while officers were dispersing a crowd of several thousand people and arrested more than 60.

A shooting about 1:45 a.m. on the city’s West Side happened less than an hour after a drive-by shooting in Washington Park on the city’s South Side left two people dead and four others wounded.

At the same time, with the shooting that wounded the officers, the department so far this year has seen 33 of its officers either shot at or shot compared with 22 during the same period last year.

One of the officers wounded early Monday was hit in the foot and the other was struck in the thigh, police said. They were taken to a hospital and their injuries were not life-threatening, police said.

A statement from police said they had responded to several large groups in the city, resulting in multiple arrests.

“There’s been a lot of large crowd gatherings tonight, a lot of celebratory fireworks going off, kind of spontaneous,” police Superintendent David Brown said. “They were dispersing a crowd when they heard shots and felt pain.”

Fort Worth, Texas

Eight people were injured early Sunday in a shooting near a car wash in Fort Worth, Texas, after an argument between a group of men.

Police said in a statement the eight gunshot victims were taken to hospitals and were in stable condition. Police said no suspects were in custody.

Police said an officer in the area heard gunshots about 1:30 a.m., and when officers arrived, they found the eight people who had been shot.

Police said Sunday afternoon that detectives had determined the shooting began following an argument between several men. Police said one person then left the scene, retrieved a gun and began shooting toward groups of people.

Police said multiple people in the area then returned fire. Most of those wounded were innocent bystanders, police said.

Norfolk, Virginia

Police have arrested a suspect in a July 2 shooting that left four injured: a 6-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy. Police initially said the 6-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries; however, she is now considered to be in stable condition.

Police have charged a 15-year-old boy in the incident.

Cincinnati, Ohio

One person and 11 others were injured in a shooting at a block party attended by several hundred people in Toledo, Ohio, on Sunday night, while two males were killed and three others injured in a Cincinnati shooting.

Sixteen-year-old Milo Watson died at the scene, and 19-year-old Dexter Wright Jr. died later at a hospital, police said. An official said the two had some sort of preexisting dispute that preceded the shooting.

It occurred shortly before 11 p.m. as officers were working to clear the riverfront park before its closing time. A 17-year-old girl was shot in the back and left in critical condition, and two other teenagers had gunshot wounds to their arms, according to police.

Police said they were seeking information from anyone who witnessed the shooting or has video of what happened.

Amber Gray told WXIX-TV she was at the park with her son when the gunfire erupted. “We heard screaming ... we heard more shots, and we saw everyone running and screaming,” she said, adding that she grabbed her son and ran to her car to get away.

Atlanta

In Atlanta, a 14-year-old boy was killed and two other teens were injured Saturday evening after a massive brawl ended in gunfire.

A 17-year-old was detained after officers found two handguns on his person following the fatal incident, Atlanta police said in a statement. His involvement in the shooting remains under investigation.

Nearly 50 teenagers were present when the melee broke out in the 600 block of McAfee Street, Deputy Chief Charles Hampton told reporters at the scene. Most of the youths had arrived on scooters, he said. It is not clear how the brawl started, but police said several of the teens present were involved in the fight.

“Somehow, there was some type of gunfire that erupted, striking three juveniles,” Hampton said. “We know there were a lot of people. We believe there may be video out there of the fight, so we are asking anyone that has any footage of the fight to contact Atlanta police homicide.”

Three men were killed and two others injured in a Fourth of July shooting in a Dallas, Texas, neighborhood, police said.

Dallas, Texas

Dallas police said they don’t yet have any suspects identified in the shooting late Sunday. Police say the motive and circumstances around the shooting are being investigated.

KXAS-TV reported a street in the neighborhood on Monday was littered with markers as police counted bullet casings. A vehicle in the middle of the road was riddled with bullet holes.

Police said that upon arrival, officers found five people who had been shot. They were all taken to hospitals, where three of them were pronounced dead.

Police say the victims’ names will not be released until their families have been notified.
