The University of Nebraska-Lincoln said Wednesday it was closing a fraternity house and suspending all of its operations after a sexual assault was reported.

Chancellor Ronnie Green said the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity — better known as Fiji — was already on probation for violating university policy when the assault was reported.

The announcement came after about 1,000 people surrounded the fraternity Tuesday night to protest the alleged assault at the house, The Lincoln Journal-Star reported.

University police Chief Hassan Ramzah said the assault was reported early Tuesday and the investigation is continuing.

The alleged assault was the 78th rape or attempted rape reported at the university since 2015, according to police data.
