The Morehouse School of Medicine kicked off its 2013 Dr. Daniel S. Blumenthal Public Health Summit Tuesday with a discussion on how to address the country, and Georgia’s, growing obesity rate.
According to the University of Georgia’s Obesity Initiative, Georgia is one of seven states to have its obesity rate double over the past 15 years.
The theme of this year’s summit, which featured a Tuesday presentation by Howard Koh, the assistant secretary for health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is “Preventing Obesity through the Life Stages.”
Wednesday speakers will include: David Satcher, the former U.S. Surgeon General and the director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute on campus; William H. Dietz, the former director of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at the Centers for Disease Control; and Arshed Quyyumi Co-Director of the Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute.
The summit will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the medical school, 720 Westview Dr.
