More than 120 dogs are going to new homes and new lives because of the Cherokee County Animal Shelter’s Happily-Ever-After Celebration.

A small white Maltese or “malti-poo” was the first to be adopted on Saturday.

She was followed by hundreds of others over the next few hours and, perhaps, days.

Shelter Director Susan Garcia said prospective families started lining up about 6 p.m. Friday to adopt hundreds of canines. Those that have not been spayed or neutered can still be adopted, but their new families will have to wait to take them home.

So far, about 120 dogs are going to new families, with about 150 remaining.

She said adoptive parents who are already registered were being helped beyond the 5 p.m. normal closing hour Saturday. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday and will reopen Tuesday, where remaining dogs will be adopted through the regular process.

The shelter is offering for adoption many of the more than 350 animals seized from a kennel last month.

The kennel’s owners, Guerry and Joy Wise, were each charged with 366 misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, according to the sheriff’s office.

Has she ever seen so many dogs up for adoption at one time?

“Never, no,” said Garcia.
