The Cherokee County man reported missing earlier this week was found dead Saturday in North Carolina, according to police.

The body of Canton resident Douglas Michael Shockley was found less than a mile from where his truck was found, near the Pisgah National Forest in Haywood County, N.C. Investigators believe Shockley died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 46.

Shockley was last seen at 9 a.m. Monday leaving the Bridgemill area, where he lived with his wife and two children, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators asked for the public’s help in locating Shockley, last seen driving his gray 2015 Nissan Frontier pickup.

The truck was located Thursday morning about an hour northeast of Asheville. Dozens of people searched the area of Shockley, who was found shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday.

“This is a sad and tragic situation that has changed a family’s dynamics forever,” Haywood County Sheriff Greg Christopher said in a statement released by the sheriff’s office. “Our prayers are with the family.”

Nearly 4,000 people joined a Facebook page titled "Find Mike Shockley," and a vigil was held during the week. A message posted on the page late Saturday thanked those that assisted in the search for Shockley.

“Even though the outcome was not what we hoped, the family will be forever grateful for your kindness,” the Facebook page stated.
