The body of a missing 84-year-old Carroll County woman was found in Douglas County on Wednesday.

A man riding a 4-wheeler through the woods, near South Flat Rock Road, saw a body and called authorities. The remains were identified as that of Hattie Mae McGatha, who had been missing since Saturday, according to Randy Daniel, Douglas County coroner. She was pronounced dead at the scene about 4:45 p.m.

Daniel said McGatha had dementia and heart issues. According to a Mattie’s Call issued by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, McGatha was thought to be driving a light blue 2001 Hyundai.

The coroner said McGatha had accidentally driven onto an old logging road, where her car got stuck in the terrain. He said it appears as if she got out of the car and attempted to walk, but she was “deep in the woods.”

Capt. Jeff Richards of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said McGatha was last seen at her Pope Road residence on Friday. A family member told officials McGatha and her car disappeared between Saturday night and Sunday.

An autopsy will be performed, but Daniel said he is doubtful foul play played a role in the woman’s death.
