The Milton Police Department says it's gotten several calls about a phone scam invoking the name of the Internal Revenue Service.

The agency said it got several calls this week from residents saying they've been contacted by someone claiming to be from the IRS and requesting payment for taxes owed.

The department said the caller tells them that they either owe a tax payment, or that a warrant's been issued for their arrest because of nonpayment, then asks for money to resolve the "problem." Milton Police stress that the IRS never contacts people by phone, and said that anyone getting a call should not give the person at the other end of the line any personal information, bank information, and most of all, any payment.

On the department's Facebook page, one resident told police she had gotten such a call twice in one recent day. Another said he'd also gotten been contacted , and had reported the number to the FCC.
