A Rockdale County deputy was flown to an Atlanta hospital early Monday after being seriously injured when he was hit by a car while assisting with an interstate crash.

The incident happened on I-20 shortly before 2:45 a.m., according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Lt. Mark Riley. The injured deputy had been directing traffic around a crash in the eastbound lanes of the interstate where it meets Ga. 162 near Conyers, Riley said.

The deputy’s patrol car, another patrol vehicle and a Rockdale County fire truck were blocking two left lanes of the interstate while they were on the scene of the crash. The deputy was standing in the right lane instructing drivers to move over.

At some point, a person driving a gray 2017 Nissan Rogue swerved from the left lane to the far right and hit the deputy. The driver stayed at the scene of the crash.

The deputy, who was not named, is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries, the Rockdale sheriff’s office said in a statement. No other injuries were reported during the incident.
