Two fugitives who authorities suspected in at least 22 armed robberies in three states, including Georgia, were found shot to death inside a South Carolina hotel room late last week as police closed in, according to reports.
Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies and federal marshals tracked the alleged bandits to a room at the Suburban Extended Stay Motel, located off Interstate 95 in Florence on Friday.
When investigators knocked and announced themselves, two gunshots rang out from behind the door.
Inside, police later found Chauntress Evelyn Like, 21, of Westerville, Ohio, and Donovan McMillan, 25, of Hartsville, South Carolina, dead from gunshot wounds.
Police did not fire any shots, and no other casualties were reported.
Authorities called in the local SWAT team before entering the room, fearing the potential for an armed standoff, which never materialized.
The Florence County Coroner’s Office is awaiting autopsy results to determine whether each man either shot himself or if they shot each other.
Officials have not revealed the locations of their wounds.
On Sunday, both men were positively identified by Florence County Coroner Keith Von Lutcken.
The men were involved in at least 22 heists across Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, police said in a Monday news release.
Police had obtained multiple felony warrants to bring the crime spree to an end.
In Florence County, the men were suspected in a series of armed robberies at several retailers, including a CVS Pharmacy on Nov. 6; a Food Lion grocery store on Jan. 23; and an Aldi grocery store on Feb. 5.
