Normal rail service has resumed at MARTA’s Civic Center station, nearly three hours after the station was shut down because of a suspicious package.

MARTA tweeted just before noon Tuesday that service had been restored to the station on West Peachtree Street, which was shut down when the package was discovered around 9 a.m.

Trains on the north and south lines continued through the station without stopping while the package was investigated, MARTA spokeswoman Alisa Jackson said. No bus bridge was set up because the adjacent stations, Peachtree Center and North Avenue, were within walking distance of the Civic Center station, she said.

Atlanta police blocked traffic on West Peachtree Street, and the adjacent Peachtree Summit Federal Building was evacuated.

In an email sent to media outlets just before 12:30 p.m., Atlanta police Officer Kim Jones said the device was detonated.

No other details were released.
