A Marietta man will spend 20 years in prison after killing his ex-girlfriend’s fiancé.

Patrick Lamar Burr, 41, was sentenced Tuesday in Cobb County Superior Court in the 2012 shooting death of 24-year-old Arthur “Dwayne” Moses Jr. A jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter in early October.

In addition to the prison time, Burr is to serve five years on probation, bringing his total sentence to 25 years.

The jury also convicted him of felony murder and aggravated assault, as well as possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, according to a news release from the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office.

On Dec. 30, Burr killed Moses, while Moses was sitting in a car with Burr’s on-again, off-again girlfriend of 11 years, Fredericka Washington McCrary. He was arrested that night and subsequently charged with felony murder, according to the release, and has been in jail since.

Burr and McCrary had broken up in October 2012 but continued to communicate. McCrary, who lived with her mother, was not home when Burr stopped by Dec. 30. At some point the two made contact by phone, and McCrary told Burr she was engaged to Moses.

According to the release, Burr returned to the house, saw the couple sitting in a car in the driveway, and opened fire on the automobile with a .45 caliber handgun.

“I walked in front of my truck and started shooting,” Burr said during the trial, according to the district attorney’s office.

Moses was shot five times in the back as he tried to run away, the release said. No one else was hurt.
