Police in Clayton County are looking for a man they say shot a woman who was trying to break up with him at a Riverdale home early Wednesday.

Investigators said a group of children tried to intervene when Deyand Perry pulled out a gun and shot the woman in her left thigh. He is wanted on several charges, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon during a crime, according to Clayton police.

The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. at a home in the 70 block of Flint River Road, police said in a statement. When they arrived, the victim told officers Perry had shot her during an argument.

“She was leaving him, and he wasn’t happy about it,” police said in a statement.

The victim said Perry locked the door of the home to keep her from leaving. Then, he pulled out a handgun and shot her, police said.

The shooting happened in front of four children, the eldest of whom tried to deescalate the situation, police said. After being struck, the woman unlocked the door and ran out of the home.

Perry followed her and tried to shoot her a second time, police said.

“Fortunately, Mr. Perry’s second shot missed the victim but did strike a BMW in the driveway,” police said.

Perry ran away when a bystander intervened in the incident.

Clayton police said Perry is considered armed and dangerous. In addition to aggravated assault, he is wanted on charges of cruelty to children and simply battery/family violence.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to contact police.
