Man shot at home by Polk County deputy identified

The man shot and killed by a Polk County deputy Friday has been identified as Levi Weaver, 18.

The GBI, which is investigating the shooting, told Channel 2 Action News the deputy was responding to a disturbance call on Hillside Drive near Cedartown around 5:45 p.m. when Weaver came at the deputy with a knife and a bat.

According to northwestgeorgianews.com, Weaver was shot twice in the chest at his home by chief jail admininstrator Jerry Shellhouse. Shellhouse, a 20-year veteran, was driving his patrol vehicle back to the office when he heard a call about a resident acting erratically. According to the news site Polk County police and other deputies were tied up at other calls and events so Shellhouse offered to respond.

He was met at the house by Weaver’s relative who told him he was acting erratically and breaking things inside the house.
Sheriff Johnny Moats told the site an armed Weaver approached Shellhouse inside the residence.
Cedartown is located about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta.
