A 58-year-old man died in a single-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon near the Cobb-Paulding county line.

Investigators believe James H. Diethorn, of Douglasville, traveling northbound on Dallas-Acworth Highway when he left the roadway and struck a fire hydrant, Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman.

Diethorn’s 1994 Dodge Ram pickup truck then re-entered the roadway, crossed over both lanes of traffic and traveled approximately 120 feet down an embankment, Bowman said late Friday.

Diethorn died at the scene of the wreck, which happened near Allatoona High School, near Acworth, Bowman said. The victim may have had a medical emergency prior to the crash, police said.

Cobb County police and firefighters were at the scene around 5 p.m. Traffic was temporarily blocked in the area.

Anyone with information about the wreck is asked to call Cobb police at 770-499-3987.
