He told police another driver killed his girlfriend on the side of I-20, then changed his story and said he shot her on accident.
On Thursday, Corey Deshun Jones was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 10 years for the March 24, 2014, shooting death of Twyanna Boyd.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney handed down the sentence after a jury found Jones, 29, guilty of murder, felony murder and aggravated assault, the Office of the Fulton County District Attorney said Monday.
At trial, Chief Senior Assistant District Attorney Demone Lee argued that Jones and Boyd were engaged in an argument that afternoon while driving on I-20 near the westside Perimeter. Boyd pulled onto the shoulder and began walking away.
At that point, Jones fired a gun, striking Boyd in the back and killing her, according to an emailed statement from the Fulton DA’s office.
“When police arrived on the scene, Defendant Jones claimed his girlfriend had been shot by another driver he knew who had been following them,” officials said in the statement. “Further investigation revealed the man Jones claimed had shot his girlfriend was in fact in a meeting at the time of the murder, excluding him as a suspect. … Defendant Jones later revised his story and claimed he accidentally shot his girlfriend.”
The murder weapon was found in a grassy area near the scene, officials said. Jones was arrested shortly after Boyd’s death.
