Police in the northwest Georgia town of Rockmart are investigating the shooting death of a man found in a ditch Tuesday morning.

A 911 caller reported hearing shots fired on Morgan Valley Road just after 10:30 a.m., Chief Keith Sorrells with Rockmart police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Officers arrived and found the body of a young male in a ditch, Sorrells said.

The man, who had been shot to death, is the city’s first homicide case in more than two years, Sorrells said. The victim’s name was not released Tuesday night, pending notification of family members.

Several agencies are assisting Rockmart police with the investigation, including Polk County and Cedartown police departments, the Georgia State Patrol, GBI and FBI, Sorrells said. No suspects had been identified late Tuesday.

“It’s still early in the investigation,” Sorrells said. “We’re trying to run down everything that we can.”

Anyone with information about the shooting death is asked to contact Rockmart police at 770-684-6558.

The last homicide in Rockmart was on New Year's Day 2011, when a 16-year-old was shot and left to die in the street. Days later, Jermaine Deon Ware, then 34, surrendered to police.

Ware is serving life in prison following his murder conviction, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
