Clayton County police found a man dead next door after responding to an attempted burglary in Jonesboro on Saturday night.

The homeowners came home around 10:30 p.m. to find their front door had been forced open, according to a Clayton County police press release.

The homeowner walked into his house and discovered three men stealing items from inside. The homeowner owned a gun, and there were reportedly “gunshots fired” when he confronted the intruders, authorities said. The three men climbed through an open window and left the house.

When police arrived on the scene, they found a man lying on the ground in a neighbor’s front yard “unresponsive,” and he was later pronounced dead by emergency units. The man had one gunshot wound to his upper torso, according to the GBI medical examiner.

Police said they cannot be sure at this time whether the dead man is related to the burglary.

The Clayton County Police Major Felony Unit will continue to investigate this incident.
