A Fairburn man was convicted Tuesday in the June 2011 shooting death of this wife, the Fulton County District Attorney said.

Paul Mattei, 67, was found guilty of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, insurance fraud and weapons offenses in connection with the shooting death of Angela Williams, DA Paul Howard’s office announced. He was then sentenced to life plus 20 years in prison.

On June 30, 2011, Williams drove herself to a Senoia Road gas station in Fairburn and told a customer pumping gas that she had been shot, according to investigators. The driver’s side window of her car was shattered and she had been shot three times in the chest. Williams died after being transported to Atlanta Medical Center.

The day after Williams was killed, detectives questioned Mattei, the victim’s husband of two months, Howard said. Mattei told police he and his wife lived in separate locations and that he had not spoken with her in several days, investigators said. Mattei said he was told there was an accident involving his wife, but he never inquired about her condition, according to Howard’s office.

The night of the victim’s death, Mattei researched information online about obtaining a payment from his insurance company, Howard’s office said. Approximately six weeks later, Mattei then called the insurer and inquired about filing a claim to collect $150,000.

Mattei was arrested Aug. 29, 2011, and charged with his wife’s death.
