DeKalb police confirmed Wednesday they have made an arrest in a double homicide.

Detectives arrested 46-year-old Derrick Hepson last week on two counts of murder, Capt. Stephen Fore told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“Detectives working the case obtained evidence that leads them to believe Hepson is responsible for the double homicide at the Knights Inn on Panola Road in September 2014,” Fore said.

About 12:30 p.m. Sept. 15, a maid at the Knights Inn found the bodies of Stone Mountain residents Nathaniel Dumas, 34, and Marquita Smith, 31, in a room. Both had been shot.

“They do believe they have been dead for some time. We don’t know the length of time,” DeKalb police spokeswoman Mekka Parish told The AJC at the time.

Fore declined to provide details about the motive or Hepson’s arrest.
