A Fulton County grand jury has indicted the man accused of running down and seriously injuring a bicyclist on numerous charges, the District Attorney’s Office said Monday.
Joseph Alan Lewis, of Atlanta, who was 19 at the time of June incident, was indicted for criminal attempt to commit murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, serious injury by vehicle, hit-and-run, criminal damage to property in the first degree, tampering with evidence, reckless driving, failure to report accident, expired or no license on person, and driving-expired or no license plate or decal, a spokeswoman for the DA said.
Lewis is accused in a June 9 attack on Gregory Germani, who was hit by a Dodge Nitro that then sped away, according to police. Witnesses said Germani and the driver of the vehicle engaged in a verbal dispute moments before Germani was hit.
Germani, 50, suffered serious injuries to the head, neck and torso and was in intensive care at Grady Memorial Hospital for several weeks with brain trauma.
Investigators later identified Lewis as the suspect, and he surrendered and was arrested July 17. Since his arrest, he has been held without bond at the Fulton County jail.
Lewis’ girlfriend, Shanelle Woodard, 22, of Atlanta, was also arrested in the case and charged with hindering the apprehension of a criminal and tampering with evidence. She was released from jail after posting $15,000 bond, records showed.
