If you’re aching to join an organized sports league in Atlanta — but aren’t quite up for something like soccer or volleyball — this may be the social outing you’re looking for.

It’s competitive bocce ball, going down this fall at Georgetown Park in Dunwoody.

The city of Dunwoody is teaming up with the Atlanta Sport and Social Club to offer a "bocce league" over the next several months, officials recently announced. Registration is now open for individuals and teams.

“We’re excited about this opportunity to involve young professionals and activate Georgetown Park, where we have two bocce courts,” Dunwoody Recreation Supervisor Rachel Waldron said in a statement. “We’ve been looking for ways to partner with the Atlanta Sport and Social Club, and this is a great start.”

Bocce — an Italian word pronounced “baw-chee” — is played by trying to hit a small target ball by tossing larger, heavy balls. The sport has grown in mainstream popularity in recent years, and several bars around metro Atlanta now offer it as an activity.

Participating in the league costs $55 for an individual and $200 for a team of up to six people. It includes five regular season matches (played on Sundays), automatic playoff qualification and access to the club’s social events at local bars.

Matches begin on Sunday, Sept. 15.

“Bocce is an awesome, low requirement program that is a great way to introduce Dunwoody residents to the Atlanta Sport and Social Club brand. We hope to expand our offering with our more traditional sports later this year,” Marvin Guelce, the director of sports leagues for Atlanta Sport and Social Club, said in a statement.

The club, which organizes leagues for more than a dozen sports in Atlanta, has more than 25,000 annual participants.
