A 21-year-old driver was killed Sunday afternoon after crashing into a telephone pole near Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County police said.

A passenger in the vehicle, also 21, was taken from the scene by helicopter.

Few details were available Monday, but police spokesman Cpl. Deon Washington said the crash happened just before 1:10 p.m. at the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and Woodhaven Drive.  The passenger's condition was unclear. No identities were released.

Washington said the investigation was ongoing but that "speed and drugs" were possible factors in the crash.
