A 16-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in the fatal stabbing and shooting of a 13-year-old Decatur youth.

Marquis Overstreet's body was found July 6 by a landscaper in the 5300 block of Biffle Downs Road, off Panola Road near Stone Mountain. The eighth grader had been shot and stabbed multiple times, according to the DeKalb County Medical Examiner. Investigators say the motive appears to be robbery.

DeKalb police told the victim's mother earlier this week the 16-year-old turned himself in to authorities and confessed to the slaying. Keisha Langhorne, who reported Marquis as a runaway to police, said she believes her son was en r0ute to his girlfriend's house for a Fourth of July cookout, but never made it.

"He was taking a shortcut," Langhorne said.

The suspect's identity has not been released due to his age. He's being held without bond at DeKalb's Youth Detention Facility, police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.
